Oliver Whyton (Ollie) from Portland is the youngest member of the HeliOps’ maintenance team and as our only Apprentice, is currently in the 4th year of his Degree Apprenticeship administered by Yeovil College. The 5-year course is split between academic and skill of hand learning at the College, together with ‘hands on’ practical aircraft engineering here at HeliOps. During the first 3 years, the course focus was on achieving an HNC and HND in subjects such as Helicopter Aerodynamics and Propulsion Systems and at the end of this phase, Ollie successfully achieved a Merit.

In the final 2 years of the programme, the focus of the course shifts towards achieving a BEng in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering with the academic classroom phase now taking place at Plymouth University. Ollie has just completed his first unit of Computer Aided Engineering achieving a 2:1 and has recently commenced studying Control and Intelligent Systems Design.
