HeliOperations is pleased to announce the installation of a new drone detection system at Portland. Supplied by DTIS Technology, the system adds to the site’s aviation infrastructure, providing an additional capability for detecting drone activity in the surrounding area. The installation forms part of our ongoing investment in the facilities at Portland, supporting safe operations as the use of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) continues to develop.

Awareness of drone activity is particularly important in an environment used by helicopters and other aircraft. Drone detection provides an additional source of information, helping to build a clearer picture of activity around the heliport. Alongside established operational procedures and coordination with drone operators, the new system supports our continued focus on aviation safety.

Portland is home to our sister company, Drone Certification Agency (DCA), which supports the testing, evaluation and certification of Unmanned Aircraft Systems. The installation complements the wider development of these facilities, strengthening the infrastructure available to support planned UAS activity within an established aviation environment. As drone technology creates new opportunities across commercial, industrial and maritime sectors, careful planning and coordination remain essential to its safe integration with existing aviation operations.

HeliOperations is developing a new drone permit system in-house, with launch planned for later this month. This online platform will allow drone operators to create an account and submit flight requests for proposed UAS operations within the Portland Heliport Flight Restriction Zone (FRZ). The system is designed to make the application process more straightforward, helping operators provide the information our team needs to review and coordinate proposed flights. Further details and a link to the platform will be shared when the system goes live.
